Hi All,
Recently read a theory that portrait sculpture as we know it began around 1st century BC.The author stated that prior to that the Romans and other cultures sculpted their impressions of dieties etc.The Romans had begun the tradition of death masks, and, sometime around this era they began "touching up" these masks, most likely the hair, perhaps the eyes.Someone then got the idea to finish them in the round, and, that was expanded to the living beginning the art of portrait sculpture.Wondering if anyone else may have read anything at all about this theory?
Joel
